On May 15, Ontario Health is launching a Community of Practice (CoP) for health care teams who provide care and support for people with sickle cell disease (SCD) to improve the quality of care they receive across Ontario.
“The SCD CoP will offer those who join, access to the best practices being implemented across Ontario, opportunities for co-creation with Lived Experience Advocates, and support from experts across the province to help increase their confidence and comfort with caring for individuals with SCD,” said Karen Fleming, Clinical Nurse Specialist at the University Health Network. “A CoP on SCD is key to improving access to equitable, culturally safe care.”
The goal of the CoP is to create a community that will promote the implementation of the Sickle Cell Disease Quality Standard. The CoP will be hosted through an interactive space on Quorum. This space will include a discussion forum, a document library with tools and resources, and a member directory for networking with other health care teams doing SCD-related work. Regular interactive webinars will be organized through the CoP, focused on specific topics and content streams relevant to either the larger community or subgroups within the CoP.
The CoP will launch with its first webinar on May 15, 2024, at 11 a.m - 12 p.m. EDT. This first session will be on Vaso-occlusive Acute Pain Management using Sublingual Fentanyl.
The session will discuss pain management for vaso-occlusive acute pain episodes for people with SCD. This will include a data-driven quality improvement initiative regarding the use of sublingual fentanyl in emergency departments, presented by Kim McLeese, RN at University Health Network.
