Ontario Health has initiated a 3-year strategy to improve hip fracture care in Ontario, prompted by the newly updated Hip Fracture: Care for People With Fragility Fractures quality standard. This strategy aims to reduce variability in hip fracture care and promote equitable, high-quality outcomes for older adults. By equipping hospitals with data, tools, and training, Ontario Health supports improvements in mortality, hospital stay, and readmissions.
Hospitals can get involved in 3 ways:
- Use Ontario Health’s Hip Fracture eReport as a quality improvement and decision support tool. The eReport is a dynamic and interactive tool that provides hospital and regional data and is updated quarterly. Compare your hospital’s data to regional and provincial benchmarks and identify areas for improvement. Hospitals can follow eReport: Access and User Guides on Quorum along with other tools to access data at hospital and regional levels.
- Leverage the NEW Hip fracture Quality Improvement Plan indicator. Ontario Health’s 2026/27 Quality Improvement Plan (QIP) program includes a new indicator related to hip fracture “Percentage of people who undergo hip fracture surgery within 48 hours of first arrival at any hospital.” For hospitals not meeting the 48-hour surgery benchmark, engage leadership about including the new hip fracture indicator in their hospital’s QIP. - Apply strategies from the NEW Hip Fracture Care Implementation Toolkit. Ontario Health launched the Hip Fracture Care Implementation Toolkit as part of its 3-year strategy to improve hip fracture care across the province. Developed by an advisory group of Ontario clinicians with expertise in hip fracture care, the toolkit offers practical strategies and resources to support hospitals in implementing the Hip Fracture quality standard. Ontario Health invites hospitals to review the toolkit and select strategies relevant to their context to improve 5 priority areas. The Hip Fracture Care Implementation Toolkit was introduced on December 11, 2025, during the Project ECHO Orthogeriatrics Community of Practice session.
