We will begin with a powerful patient perspective followed by Southlake Health’s “Lose the Brief” initiative.
Pressure injuries remain a significant patient safety concern in acute care settings. Evidence suggests that eliminating adult incontinence briefs, which create an additional layer between patients and the bed surface, can reduce pressure injuries by approximately 20%. Reusable incontinence pads have also been associated with an increased risk of hospital-acquired pressure injuries (HAPI), and incontinence-associated dermatitis is an independent risk factor for pressure injury development.
This initiative focuses on:
- reducing unnecessary layers between patients and the bed surface
- promoting the use of air-permeable incontinence pads where appropriate
- exploring alternative approaches to incontinence management
- empowering patients to make their own choices on incontinence care.
This presentation will share the implementation process and outcomes of the initiative, along with healthcare staff perspectives on practice changes, including perceived benefits and challenges in reducing brief use in the acute care setting.
