Geriatric Emergency Management (GEM) nurse programs were implemented in all emergency departments (ED) in the LHIN in 2009. Processes for screening elderly patients in the ED requiring assessment by the GEM RN are varied, resulting in "case-finding" practice by GEM RNs. An evidence based screening tool had potential for more accurate identification of high risk patients for GEM RN consultation.
