In the context of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we are observing an increasing unease among individuals in the communities and families. We have received feedback from primary care providers that there is a need for concise, evidence-based materials to support clinical decision-making, as well as dialogue between patients and providers, regarding patients presenting with symptoms consistent with anxiety disorders. As health care providers, it is critical for us to appropriately diagnose anxiety disorders and differentiate them from other conditions that may arise in these uncertain times.
The Anxiety Disorders Quality Standard helps primary care providers to deliver evidence-based care to people and, based on that quality standard, Ontario Health has developed the Anxiety Disorders Quality Standard (QS) Placemat. (French Version).
The placemat is a quick-reference tool that concisely summarizes each of the quality statements from the quality standard, highlighting the key elements of diagnosis, assessment, and treatment for that condition, and also includes links to helpful resources and tools. Its at-a-glance format maximizes its ease of use in clinical settings, and is an evidence-based resource that can be used by primary care providers to enhance patient-centered discussions on anxiety disorders. The placemat can also be shared with patients and families to help empower patients in the management of their own care.
Previously released for low back pain and osteoarthritis, we are pleased to expand the series to include a QS placemat for anxiety disorders. Please note that while the Anxiety Disorders Quality Standard focuses on care for adults (18 years of age and older), it also includes content that is relevant for children and adolescents (under 18 years of age).
The placemat can also be uploaded and used within EMRs for easy access. Resources to support adding these tools into your EMR system will be added here on Quorum soon, so please stay tuned for more information!
Please leave your comments below and share your experiences using the Anxiety Disorders Quality Standard and the new Anxiety Disorders QS placemat! We want to know more about how different organizations and programs use the quality standards to improve the care delivered in their practices.
