Every patient at Markham Stouffville Hospital should experience high-quality, efficient and cost-effective care from admission to discharge. An increasing number of admitted patients in the Emergency Department (ED) were not satisfied with the delay in transfer to their inpatient medical bed and the hospital was not fully meeting key metrics, such as its Quality Improvement Plan (QIP) targets and capitalizing on Pay for Results (P4R) funding. Our goal was to increase the number of early discharges from the inpatient medical units to enable more timely transfer of out of the ED.
