On November 2nd, 2018, the Ontario Surgical Quality
Improvement Network (ON-SQIN) was pleased to host the 4th annual Ontario
Surgical Quality Conference in Toronto.
The conference brought together the surgical community
across the province to exchange cutting-edge ideas on how to improve surgical
care for Ontario residents.
During the conference, the Surgical Quality Improvement
Project (SQIP) awards, affectionately named the “Sqippy” awards, were presented
to organizations who demonstrated outstanding commitment to improving surgical
care.

Innovation Award
Given to the surgical team who has successfully implemented
innovative change ideas that resulted in improved surgical outcomes.
Winner:
William Osler Health System realized success in reducing ED
visits and readmissions post-operatively by implementing a “hotline” to answer
patient questions after discharge
Nominees:
- Halton Healthcare implemented virtual patient follow-up
visits
- University Health Network developed a “how to care for your
catheter at home after your prostatectomy surgery” YouTube video
- McMaster Children’s Hospital developed a powerful
infographic on best practices to reduce SSI
Greatest Improvement
in Surgical Outcomes
Given to the surgical team who has demonstrated the greatest
improvement in postoperative outcomes.
Winner:
Juravinski Hospital, Hamilton Health Sciences, for their
outstanding improvement in reducing UTIs.
The team realized a substantial reduction in their Surgical Quality
Improvement Plan progress report. Further, in their July 2018 Semi Annual Report,
they improved their UTI ranking by 10 spots, moving from 18th to 8th place in
NSQIP-Ontario.

Best Storyboard
Given to the storyboard or poster that best reflects the
high-caliber of evidence-based surgical quality improvement implementation that
this network has come to embody.

Most Engaged Surgical
Clinical Reviewer (SCR)
Awarded to the SCR who has displayed exceptional leadership
through their involvement in the Surgical Network Community of Practice. This
includes participation in monthly calls, Quorum, workshops, and conferences.
Winner:
Hannah Brooks, North York General Hospital. Hannah has
tirelessly made herself available to participate in focus groups, she has been
our go-to person for all things data related, and she continues to share her
expertise as a mentor to new SCRs.

Champion
Given to the surgeon champion who has displayed exceptional
leadership through their involvement in the Surgical Network Community of
Practice, including participating in monthly calls and presenting at
conferences.
Winners:
Duncan Rozario, Halton Healthcare, for his continued
commitment to surgical quality improvement as:
- A member of the ON-SQIN steering committee
- Author of peer reviewed articles highlighting the impact of
NSQIP and ON-SQIN at the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital
- Speaker today and at other ONSQIN events
- Championing NSQIP and surgical QI in Ontario
Rardi Van Heest, William Osler Health System, for efforts to
champion NSQIP at both Brampton Civic and Etobicoke General hospitals and her
candour in sharing her team's successes and challenges in the pursuit of
improved surgical outcomes.

Excellence in QI
Implementation
Given to the team who has displayed a commitment to quality
improvement methodology in the pursuit of better surgical outcomes.
Winner:
Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. The team at CHEO
worked with the IDEAS Advisors to improve their PDSA cycles with the goal of
reduced SSI rates. The team’s willingness to share their progress with the
network provided invaluable lessons for everyone.

Interprofessional
Team Award
Given to the surgical team who has assembled a
professionally diverse group that includes not only the surgeons and SCRs, but
also representation from hospital leaders and front-line staff.

Markham Stouffville Hospital. The Surgical Quality
Improvement Team includes: Manager of diabetes, an Endocrinologist, Chief of
Anaesthesia, Patient Experience Participant and many other front-line
clinicians.

Most Valuable Player
Given to the surgical network member who has displayed an
outstanding commitment to surgical quality improvement.
Winners:
Payam Tarighi, Sunnybrook Hospital. Payam has consistently
demonstrated a willingness to go above and beyond for the Surgical Network.
From speaking on-behalf-of HQO at the most recent ACS Conference to
spearheading the work on evolving the role of the SCR, we can always count on
Payam’s thoughtful expertise.
Amanda McFarlan, St Michael’s Hospital. Amanda has played an
instrumental role in the development of the SQIP Navigator. She has mentored
other hospitals providing advice on the administrative aspect of onboarding NSQIP
and is always available on short notice to support the work of the Network.
