Interruptions during the medication process were identified as a main contributing factor to significant patient safety events within the general surgical inpatient unit at SickKids. Interruptions increase the risk for patient harm, reduce work efficiency and can negatively impact work satisfaction. Reduction of interruptions during the medication process is thus an opportunity for improvement.
