This year Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital developed an innovative engagement framework to foster family partnership in quality and safety improvements. This framework included embedding 17 family leaders in all hospital accreditation working groups to ensure any quality and safety reviews and decisions were made with the insights, expertise and lived experiences of our clients and families.
As part of the framework the hospital also created the Family Leader Accreditation Group (FLAG). Through partnership and collaboration with the Canadian Patient Safety Institute (CPSI), hospital leaders and FLAG member, Alifa Khan updated the Patient Safety Education Program – Canada (PSEP – Canada) existing learning modules to reflect the patient and family perspective. The revised modules are designed for patients and families to actually deliver the program and train other patients and families to deliver the program.
On November 17 and 18, 2017, CPSI in collaboration with Patients for Patient Safety Canada, Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital and The Hospital for Sick Children will be offering a patient safety course specifically designed for patients, family leaders and advisory members. This course will provide an understanding for patients and families about system issues that contribute to patient safety, what their roles are in safety and how to work with clinicians/organizations to create safe systems within health care.
The registration fee to participate in the PSEP-Canada “Become a Patient and Family Leader Patient Safety Trainer” course is $899 per person plus HST. Register now as there are limited spaces available. For additional event information and questions, please contact the PSEP–Canada team at
