Providing clients with self-management support and treatment
strategies to manage chronic non-cancer pain is an important focus at Ingersoll Nurse Practitioner Led Clinic. We are
currently implementing the Centre for Effective Practice (CEP)
Managementof Chronic Non-Cancer Pain Tool to support our clients.
As part of this work, we have developed a client resource that
was informed by CEP’s guidelines.
The client resource includes:
- A description of chronic pain and factors that
contribute to it
- Self management strategies available to clients
including non-pharmacological programs, psychological and physical therapies
and referrals
- Goal setting education and action planning steps
- Additional online patient resources
Nurse practitioners and counsellors can use the package to
have important conversations with clients about their chronic pain, develop common
language and understanding of their pain, and to outline what treatment options
are available to them.
The Ingersoll Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinic offers multidisciplinary
programs, therapies and referrals outlined in the client resource, which helps
to connect clients with much needed non-pharmacological treatment options in-house.
We are conducting an electronic medical record chart review
to identify patients with chronic pain who would benefit from self-management
support and treatment. We will then be collecting data on an ongoing basis to
determine how many of these patients receive care for chronic pain and the
number of client resources provided. We anticipate a positive effect on clients’
perception of their pain experience.
Through these efforts, it is our hope to reduce the use of
pharmacological treatment options and enhance our clients’ knowledge and skills
in managing their own health.
Others may use the client resource and adapt it to your
local context as needed.
