Sickle cell indicators

Indicator: Average emergency department (ED) wait time to physician initial assessment (PIA) for individuals with sickle cell disease (SCD; CTAS 1 or 2)

This indicator measures the wait time between triage PIA for patients with SCD that have been triaged as CTAS 1 or 2. This indicator will use average time to PIA as its evaluation metric.

Indicator: Rate of emergency department (ED) 30-day repeat visits for individuals with sickle cell disease (SCD)

This indicator measures the percentage of patients with SCD who make at least one unscheduled repeat visit to the ED within 30 days of a previous unscheduled visit to an ED.

Indicator: Percentage of emergency department (ED) visits for individuals with sickle cell disease (SCD) triaged with high severity (CTAS 1 or 2)

This indicator is nondirectional. Improvement in this indicator can be an increase or decrease in the percentage of ED visits for patients with SCD of CTAS 1 or 2, depending on organizational goals. An increase in this indicator could be evidence of EDs not understating the seriousness of SCD and triaging appropriately. A decrease in this indicator could be evidence of individuals with SCD receiving better treatment from EDs and a genuine reduction in the number of patients experiencing severe symptoms from SCD.
